Making a small kitchen: a complete guide to design and create a functional interior

The design of a small kitchen needs to be thought through very carefully. The room should be quite functional and at the same time be cozy, stylish. To contain everything you need, but do not seem overloaded. We show you what points to consider when making out.

The color scheme for a small kitchen

The best solution is light colors. They visually expand the room. You can apply them to decorate walls, ceilings, floors and furniture. The smaller the area, the brighter the color scheme should be. It is worth looking at the white color and the shades close to it: ivory, pearl, cream. These shades are divided into cold and warm, so they should be selected depending on the side on which the window goes.
If you don't like the idea of a bright kitchen, you can use other shades. It is important that the room has no more than two or three basic colors. For example, a black and white color scheme may be a good option. But at the same time it is not worth overloading the room with dark tones, it is better to leave the walls light. A bright and contrasting color or pattern can be added to the apron.
If you want to emphasize, consider the design of a small kitchen with a bright refrigerator. The same accent may be a tabletop or textiles.
They often refuse a light interior for fear of problems in caring for a furniture set. But in fact, color plays a lesser role in this than the materials used.

Zoning

Often, a small kitchen has to be combined with a living room . This increases the total area due to the demolition of the walls, but requires competent methods of zoning . Bar counters and kitchen cabinets can become good delimiters of space and at the same time make the design of a small kitchen convenient - as in these photos. Thus, any space will not seem closed and oppressive.
You can apply zoning in an isolated area. For example, the color of the walls and furniture can highlight the dining area . Look at the photo - the dining area was separated using 3D panels. Visually separate the working area using lighting.
Another way to visually increase the space is to turn the door off. This technique is often used in the design of small kitchens in Khrushchev , it increases the area that can be used to arrange furniture. The aperture can be decorated with platbands, stucco moldings or turned into an arch.

Furniture and storage systems

When choosing furniture for a small kitchen, it is important to consider not only its color and style, but also its functionality. With a lack of free space, it is recommended to use a large number of vertically located cabinets and storage compartments. On the shelves and in the cabinets you can clean things that are rarely used.

Using a windowsill

Proper use of the windowsill will help expand the functional space of a small kitchen without cluttering it. It is also a very popular and stylish design solution. The windowsill can be converted into a countertop. At such a table there will be enough space for one or two people, which is suitable for a small family and will significantly save space.
Also, the tabletop is convenient to use as a working area for cooking due to natural light. Under the window-sill table,  kitchen cabinets and household appliances can be placed, and a sink or stove can be moved to the window.

Lighting in the design of a small kitchen

Uniform and soft lighting is of great importance. It will avoid the appearance of dark corners and visual narrowing of space. It is recommended to make several spotlights next to the work surface and the stove, so that the cooking process is convenient. In addition, the backlight will help to emphasize the kitchen.
When choosing jewelry and accessories, you need to remember that this is the case when less is better. Straight lines and restraint, a game of color and a couple of interesting accents, such as the original tiles on the floor and walls, will look most advantageous. Of all the interior styles, hi-tech, minimalism and Scandinavian style will look best in small kitchens .

Errors in the design of a small kitchen

1. Irrationally used space
In a small area, the fight is literally for every centimeter, so it’s worthwhile to think about the layout and the optimal size of furniture in advance. For example, a large dining table will surely eat almost all the usable space.
It is better to replace it with more compact models, organize a dining area behind the bar, on the windowsill or even take it outside the room - to where there is enough space for a large table.
You can always find additional storage space - the same window sill or space under the ceiling can bring you many benefits.
2. Only open or closed storage systems
We often see open storage systems in Western projects, they add to the space of air, but their abundance can create the impression of a mess.
However, and only closed cabinets are not the best solution. They can not only visually make the space heavier, but also complicate the work: in the kitchen there are many things that should be at hand - they are better placed on rails , shelves, countertops so that you do not have to constantly open the doors and rummage through the drawers.
The best option is furniture that combines open and closed storage systems. The former are intended for items of constant necessity, the latter - for what is used infrequently or just looks ugly.
The mentioned rails and shelves are also worth using - you just need to know the measure.
3. All household appliances in sight
Even if you decide to create a hi-tech space that honors modern technology, you should not exhibit your entire arsenal. It will only create visual noise.
Leave in sight the items that you most often use: a coffee machine, a kettle, a food processor. Other equipment, such as electric grinders and steamers, is best hidden in cabinets and removed if necessary.
4. Poor lighting
The lack of lighting and a single huge chandelier visually reduce the size of any room, but the kitchen also makes cooking uncomfortable.
The way out is to think over several lighting scenarios in the room: the upper light, the light in the cooking zone and above the dining table.
Take a closer look at the ceiling spots, especially with the ability to adjust - they will help direct the light to where you need it.
5. Dense and massive curtains on the windows
Another scourge of small spaces is the dense and long curtains that prevent natural light from penetrating inside and visually make the interior heavier. In addition, long curtains are not the most practical solution.
It is better to choose light short or roller blinds, blinds are also suitable.
6. Functional decor
Useless “decorators” have no place in a limited space - they only collect dust and create the notorious visual noise. An alternative is to use functional things for decoration. Beautiful dishes, kitchen textiles, watches - all this will help you decorate the interior, and at the same time will bring benefits.
A real example: a small kitchen project with a breakfast bar
The interior is created on the contrast of glossy and matte surfaces. The bar counter is an additional place for easy meals, but also a win-win reception of zoning space
The effect of the color composition is enhanced by playing contrasts of glossy and matte surfaces, a variety of textures. The latter are more than enough: metal, glass, plastic, brick, ceramics, wood. Glossy surfaces reflect natural and artificial light differently, so the interior is perceived differently day and night.
In addition, the neutral matte background seems to be enriched with gloss. Brilliant details create a cheerful mood, and wood-trimmed kitchen furniture gives the modern small kitchen a traditional look.
The apartment was designed for a girl. Perhaps that is why the interior was not emphasized "traditional comfort." At the heart of all my projects is the possibility of transformation. With age, both perception and stylistic and color preferences change. Initially, the interior concept was based on the use of achromatic colors: white and gray, and for contrast - black-brown. However, during the repair period, I visited Spain, and under the impression of a trip in the interior an unplanned turquoise tone appeared.
